Overview:
Mechanical mixers used to circulate trillions of gallons of water each year to clean and treat wastewater can cost cities millions of dollars in energy expenditures.
Based in Charleston, South Carolina, EnviroMix is helping cities and counties decrease their wastewater treatment costs and increase their energy efficiency by using cleaner and more affordable technology.
EnviroMix’s proprietary technology uses short bursts of compressed air or gas to suspend solids and mix the wastewater to provide treatment, rather than traditional mixing tanks that rely on energy intensive mechanical mixing devices.
EnviroMix’s main product, BioMix, can reduce energy consumption by ~60% and save customers more than $1 million over the lifetime of the system.
The Approach:
Forbright Bank was able to assist in financing, allowing the organization to refinance existing debt, and to access additional capital for growth initiatives. These initiatives enabled EnviroMix to deploy more systems which can save 60%-80% of energy used when compared to conventional mechanical mixers. The systems also require less maintenance and lasts significantly longer (20+ years) versus mechanical mixers (5-7 years).
Results:
EnviroMix’s wastewater treatment improved water treatment and energy savings, including the following on an annual basis:
- 30 million kw of energy saved
- 35 thousand tons of nitrogen removed
- 14 thousand tons of carbon avoided
Conclusion:
Through EnviroMix’s innovative products such as BioMix, the nearly 15,000 municipal water treatment plants in the United States can reduce energy costs while also providing long-term savings, decreased maintenance requirements, and positive environmental impacts at scale.
