It’s also a good idea to take the following steps.

Contact credit reporting agencies

You should report any incidents of identity theft as soon as possible to one of the three major credit bureaus listed below, and ask them to place a fraud alert on your credit report. You only have to report fraud to one of the three credit bureaus, as they are required to contact the other two on your behalf.

Equifax: 1-800-525-6285 or place an alert online

Experian: 1-888-397-3742 or place an alert online

TransUnion: 1-800-680-7289 or place an alert online

After you place a fraud alert on your credit report, any new credit requests or changes to account information will be reviewed very carefully to verify that you are really the one making the request.

Contact the Social Security Administration

If you believe that your Social Security number or your identity has been used fraudulently, report the activity by calling the Social Security Administration Fraud hotline at 1-800-269-0271.

Review your credit report

Take time to review your credit reports and look for any errors or inconsistencies. Verify your personal information, such as your Social Security number, mailing address, and initials. Also, look through your reports for accounts you didn’t open or debts you don’t recognize. If you find any information on your report that appears to be the result of identity theft, you can request the credit bureau to remove that information.

It’s a good idea to check your credit reports regularly to make sure no new fraudulent activity has occurred. Each of the three major credit reporting agencies are required to provide you with a free copy of your credit report, at your request, once every 12 months, according to the Fair Credit Reporting Act. You can request your free credit reports online.

Report identity theft to the Federal Trade Commission

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is the government agency that keeps track of identity theft. You can call 1-877-438-4338 to report identity theft to the FTC, so that law enforcement across the country can use the information to help with investigations. You can also report identity theft to the FTC online.

File a police report

If you are a victim of identity theft or financial fraud, it’s a good idea to report the incident to your local law enforcement agency. Having a police report on file can be helpful when working with creditors who need more information.

Was there an unauthorized change to your account?
